When I first started learning guitar all I wanted to do was play cool songs. I wasn't interested in the background theory, guitar modes, guitar scales or chord formations. I knew I should learn guitar scales, but at the time I didn't think they were any use to me. I never practiced them. Scale diagrams might as well have been in Chinese. I didn't want to waste time memorizing boring note combinations or dull sets of sounds repeated over and over again. Little did I know I was falling into the same trap that 90% of new guitarists make when they first pick up a guitar. Open Question: Teaching myself guitar?
Ok, I want to start teaching myself guitar, and theres alot I need to know, I'm only 12 first of all, but I'm smart, I think I can figure this stuff out. I already know how to read sheet music and know all that theory stuff because I've played trumpet at school for 2 years. I just read an article about teaching yourself guitar, and I was wondering if I should take the, ground up approach, and play easier music and get harder songs as I go, or play a complicated song, then move down and play an even more complicated song, since I will have higher confidence after playing that hard song right away? I was also wondering about guitar type, I already have an electric guitar and I want to know if I should sell and get an acoustic? But have in mind that I ultimately want to play electric guitar/rock/metal.
